Background of the study
Collaborative translation efforts have emerged as a promising approach to language revitalization, particularly for languages facing diminishing usage in modern contexts. In Ibadan, collaborative projects involving academic institutions, cultural organizations, and community translators are working together to produce accurate and culturally resonant translations of literary and historical texts into Yoruba. These joint efforts aim not only to preserve the language but also to promote its usage among younger generations (Akinola, 2023). By pooling expertise, resources, and cultural insights, collaborative translation projects can overcome individual limitations and ensure that translations reflect both linguistic accuracy and cultural authenticity. Furthermore, these projects foster community engagement and empower local speakers by actively involving them in the language revitalization process. Despite these advantages, challenges such as coordinating diverse viewpoints, standardizing translation practices, and ensuring consistent quality remain (Oluwole, 2024). This study investigates the impact of collaborative translation efforts on the revitalization of the Yoruba language in Ibadan by examining project outcomes, stakeholder feedback, and comparative analyses of translated texts.

Statement of the problem
Although collaborative translation efforts hold great promise for Yoruba language revitalization, inconsistencies in project coordination and translation quality persist (Akinola, 2023). Diverse approaches among collaborators can lead to varied interpretations and non-standardized outputs, potentially undermining the language’s integrity. These challenges complicate efforts to produce translations that are both culturally authentic and linguistically consistent (Oluwole, 2024). This study seeks to identify the specific obstacles encountered in collaborative translation projects and to assess their overall impact on Yoruba language revitalization in Ibadan.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of collaborative translation initiatives in Yoruba revitalization.
  2. To identify challenges in coordinating translation efforts.
  3. To propose strategies for standardizing and enhancing collaboration.

Research questions:

  1. How do collaborative translation efforts contribute to Yoruba language revitalization?
  2. What challenges affect coordination and quality in these projects?
  3. What strategies can improve collaborative translation practices?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of collaborative translation in revitalizing the Yoruba language, offering insights for translators, cultural institutions, and policymakers. Improved collaborative practices can enhance translation quality, boost community involvement, and promote linguistic preservation in Ibadan (Akinola, 2023; Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to collaborative translation efforts for Yoruba language revitalization in Ibadan and does not address individual translation projects or efforts in other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Collaborative translation: Joint efforts by multiple translators or organizations to produce a translation.
  • Language revitalization: Efforts aimed at increasing the use and transmission of a language.
  • Yoruba language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
